Refining Your Hunting Strategy - The Art of Making Adjustments

This week, we're talking about the art of making adjustments to your hunting tactics and strategy throughout a trip or a season. In order for us to be successful, we need to:

  • Be in the right place,
  • At the right time,
  • With the right set up,
  • With the right approach and hunting system.

This conversation shares some general advice and stories about when and how to consider minor adjustments to your hunting approach. We also cover when its entirely appropriate to throw a Hail Mary and try something different.

  1. Develop a plan ahead of time based upon your desktop map recon, unit information, hunting dates and time of season;
  2. Have a handful of backup locations and strategies in that general location along with a 'Hail Mary' area just in case you need to make a big adjustment
  3. Give your plan a fair chance - if you what you expected to find in terms of animals, sign, or hunting conditions, great!
  4. Make minor adjustments incrementally and in a calculated rational manner if its the right place but you're not seeing animals within a few days - different access or entry, different set up etc.
  5. Know when to make a big adjustment - if weather, significant hunting pressure or animal movement has shifted and they're no longer in the area.
  6. Maintain flexibility and a good attitude, enjoy the trip and be safe.
